Born in Jogjakarta, Indonesia in 1961. Graduated from the film department of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts in 1985, and subsequently made short films and documentaries. Directed his first feature film "Love Is a Slice of Bread" in 1991. His next work "Letter to an Angel" (94) won several awards internationally, including the Gold Prize at the Young Cinema Competition of that Year's Tokyo International Film Festival. Other feature length works include "And the Moon Dances" (96), "Leaf on a Pillow" (99), " A Poet" (01), "Bird-Man Tale" (02), " Of Love and Eggs" (04) and "Serambi" (05), all of which constantly address Indonesia's diverse cultures and social issues head-on. In 2006, "Opera Jawa" (06) was screened at TOKYO FILMeX. His latest films "The Blindfold" (11) and "Soegija" (12) were screened at Indonesian Express of the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2012. He is also the director of Yayasan SET, which focuses on social and political education in Indonesia.
